The Village of Hopeman

The story of our village begins in 1805. Like so many of the original followers of Jesus, Hopeman's first inhabitants were fishermen and their families. People displaced during the Highland Clearances.

They travelled to this coastal location and from these early beginnings, a village thrived.

Now, over 200 years later, Hopeman is one of the most popular seaside villages along the Moray Firth coast. With two beaches, a harbour, a primary school, several shops and a supportive community.

The History of Our Church

For 125 years, Hopeman Baptist Church has been a spiritual anchor in the village and communities beyond.

Originally, our founders walked a total of 12 miles to Lossiemouth and back every Sunday to attend the nearest Baptist congregation. In 1898, this devotion to their faith inspired the establishing of their own church; Hopeman Baptist.

Today, several descendants of those founding families still play an active role in the congregation. Because of their faithfulness to obey Lord Jesus Christ, families and individuals not only from the village but also from surrounding communities and even other countries (such as United States and South Africa) call Hopeman Baptist their church home.

Our Vision for the Future

In 2023, we will celebrate the 125th anniversary of our church. This year we will have a range of events and gatherings in the church and in the village for the whole community to celebrate this great milestone with us. One of our goals as a church is to foster authentic relationships with one another. We view the church as a family, so we aim to find ways to connect people with one another and help them to build real friendships.

We recently implemented this goal by reinstating the Friendship Hour last year and we also began a new Ladies Bible study. It has been wonderful to see old friends meet and new connections made in these ways! As our congregation continues to grow, we look forward to adding more new ministries to our calendar.
